How to get past a creative block

Working in marketing, our job is based on our ability to be creative. Like everyone, I have encountered times when it seems like I can’t get my brain to cooperate the way I would like. I have had plenty of times when I felt stuck and unproductive. Over time, I have developed practices for myself that help me to dig myself out of this rut and get into the flow state. Whenever you may feel stuck, whether that be in work, school, or general life, you can try these tips and tricks to help you manifest a state of full immersion and attention.

Whenever I encounter a block, the first thing I do is go outside. I find that when I feel stuck, sitting in front of the computer and trying to force it out of myself does nothing but potentially makes matters worse. I find that stopping where I feel stuck and taking a complete break from thought is what helps me to reset my mentality and then start fresh. Going for a short walk can accompany the fresh air. This time spent outside of work could be as short as five minutes. Just taking time to recenter yourself and clear your mind can provide you with a clean slate to start fresh with.

Another way to reset the mind is to practice mediation. Breathing exercises and mediation can help to free the mind of any feelings of stress or feeling stuck. This allows you to completely clear your mind and find presence and mindfulness. These exercises can not only help with your creativity, but they can also have numerous mental benefits. For longer-term creativity blocks, something that works for me is opening my mind to something I have never been exposed to. These new experiences help to stimulate my brain in new ways and open new ways of thinking. For example, try a cooking class or a painting class, or go somewhere new. Even something as simple as listening to a new genre of music can help to open your mind to new avenues. Don’t know where to start? Click here for some ideas.
